Women: What can I do to avoid being sexually harassed every day?

Background: I'm an 18 year old college student, very shy, I just transferred to my college and don't know anybody. I couldn't live on campus because the freshman got first priority. I don't have a car. I live in an apartment complex less than a mile away from campus. I have to walk to and from school everyday. This is where most of the harassment takes place. There hasn't been a day since I started school that a man hasn't made a sexual comment at me. I have been followed a few times. this happens no matter what I wear. Today I wore sweat pants and a hoodie and it still happed. I looked online and there are 68 registered sex offenders within a 2 mile radius of my apartment complex. That is so scary. But it makes sense. I don't leave my apartment after dark. I dress as modestly as possible. The harassment varies from men in parked cars asking me to lift up my shirt to men driving by really fast and blurting out "I'd f_ck you so hard" Those are just a few examples. What can I do to prevent this? My situation has made me bitter and resentful and completely distrustful towards all men. I don't want to be this way but right now it seems like the only option. Please help.
