What is the Russian orthodox religion like?

So, I would like to go to a Russian orthodox church near my home but I don't really know what to expect. What is a service usually like? What holidays do the people celebrate? How exactly do you need to dress because the person in charge (I don't know what he's called) told me to dress modestly. But, what exactly does that mean?
