A decent college laptop?

I am well aware that this question is asked often, but time changes and I may have different prerequisites for one. I was wondering what would be a good laptop for my standards. I have a modestly nice computer I am bringing to college (My friend built it for about 800 total w/ accessories), but I also want a laptop for classes, notes, and whenever I am out of my dorm. With this being said, I am not looking for something that can run demanding programs. I am looking for a fast laptop that can run basic programs like Word. I would rather the price not tip over 500 total, but a little over isn't going to burn a hole in my pocket.
